Basic information about Malpaso

The highest mountain of El Hierro is Pico de Malpaso (Malpaso Mountain). Its peak is 1,501 metres above sea level. Like other mountains on the Canary Islands and the islands themselves, Malpaso has volcanic origin.

View from the peak of Malpaso

There are pathways which you can use to hike to the top of Malpaso. The reward is a great view of the whole El Hierro island, including its landscape and nature around (lapilli fields and the typical Canary pine forests).

On the horizon you can also see Tenerife and the Teide (a volcano and the highest mountain of all Canary Islands and whole Spain), as well as the islands of La Palma, La Gomera or Gran Canaria.

Weather at the peak of Malpaso

As with most mountain peaks, the weather can be less than nice at the top of Malpaso. Though the common stereotype about Canary Islands weather, clear sky and pure sunshine, is sometimes the case, be also prepared for clouds and wind. Also note that the temperature in 1,500 metres of altitude is considerably lower than at the coast.

Taxi from El Pinar to Cruz de los Reyes

If you don’t want to walk too long, you can take a taxi from El Pinar to Cruz de los Reyes. From Cruz de los Reyes it is only a short walk to the peak of Malpaso with much fewer metres to climb. The downside is that you miss some beautiful scenery along the way.
